Nujood

I just read this article in reader's digest
about a 10 yr old girl in Yemen who was married off to this 30 yr old guy
Her family was also poor, so to marry her off was actually something htat happened regularly
And supposedly, the husband siad that he wouldn't have intercourse with her til she was older
and surprise surprise, he raped her every night

her life was a living nightmare, where she was forced to be a maid by the mother in law, then at night a whole other sort of abuse began.

she actually ran away and found the courthouse and got a judge to listen to her story.
while in the end, she got granted divorce from the courts, i cna't help but feel horrified

at he end of the article it states that the Yemeni parliament passed a law raising the legal age of consent from 15 to 17, it was overturned the nxt day by conservative parties.
How sick is that???????????
they actually think its TRADITION to continue this child bride business
And of course, to get a divorce it'll bring shame on the whole family bla bla
Luckily for nojuud, i guess the humanitarian groups are probably making sure she's ok.
but doesn't it just show that so many other girls are out there who didn't knwo the existince of the courts or even are aware of a way out?
nojuud's family did't want to help her, her own mother believed it was a way of life of a woman to endure these kinds of sufferings.

garh, i hate it when i read about these stories. it's like girls are nothign but objects. if they get tired of one, lets just get another child bride!

i'm also feeling a deep sense of gratitude because i'm born in a more civilised area. where women's rights, while not equal to men, is pretty close to it.
What would happen if i were born lets say in a small rural area, like yemen or something. i wouldn't be typing on this laptop, i wouldn't be getting a degree, i wouldn't be procrastinating finishing my final year project report. I wouldn't even realize that there was another way of life besides having to blindly follow my father's whims

stupid sadistic male chauvinistic shits
